Which Claude should a business use?

Use Claude chat for questions and one-off drafts, Claude Code for repeatable jobs on your own files, and Claude Duet for keeping on top of the inbox, calendar and connected apps. They aren't competing versions of the same thing. They suit different shapes of work. • Chat: you ask, it answers, inside one conversation. • Claude Code: it works inside a folder on your computer, follows written rules and runs saved procedures. • Claude Duet: it watches your connected apps from its own cloud computer, messages you first and asks before acting.

When Claude chat is enough

Chat is right when the job starts and ends in one sitting: an answer, an explanation, a first draft, a summary of a document you upload. It's the quickest way to think something through. It struggles with work that repeats every week, needs many files at once, or depends on rules you'd otherwise have to paste in every time. That's usually the sign to move a job somewhere else.

When to use Claude Code

Claude Code suits repeatable document work on your own machine: tender bids, quotes, invoices, reports, content plans. It reads every file in a job folder, follows the standing rules in CLAUDE.md, and can run a saved procedure (a skill) the same way every time. Because the files stay in folders you control, it's also a good fit when the work involves documents you don't want sitting in another service. Our Get Seen, Get Sales, Get Paid guide and workflow harness guide show how this works in practice.

When Claude Duet fits

Duet suits the ongoing, always-on part of running a business: noticing what needs you across email, calendar and connected apps, and doing the first steps before you ask. It runs in the cloud, so it keeps working when your laptop is shut, and it asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes. Its limits point to where it doesn't fit. During the preview it can't see files on your computer, it can read your work in Claude but not change it, and it's US-only (Anthropic's help centre).

Side by side

The quickest way to choose is to ask where the work lives and who starts it. • Where it runs: chat in a conversation; Claude Code in a folder on your computer; Duet on its own cloud computer. • Who starts: you start chat and Claude Code; Duet can come to you first. • Best for: chat for one-off thinking and drafts; Claude Code for repeatable work on your files; Duet for monitoring and follow-through across connected apps. • Safeguards: Claude Code asks permission before editing files or running commands by default; Duet asks before sending, paying, signing or deleting. • Availability: chat and Claude Code are widely available; Duet is a US-only research preview for now.

Using them together

Most small businesses will end up with two of the three: chat for thinking, and either Claude Code or an agent for the repeat work. A sensible split is Claude Code for the documents you produce (quotes, invoices, bids) and an agent for the inbox and calendar around them. Whatever the mix, keep the same rules everywhere: prices come from your price list, anything that leaves the business is approved by a person, and personal data is handled under the PDPA. Come and talk it through in person. Our year-end OTG Christmas Gathering is on Monday 28 December in Singapore: an evening of networking, dinner and a gift exchange with the people we've worked, learnt and built with this year. Bring the one job you'd most like to hand to an agent, and we'll talk through which tool fits. Register on Luma.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Claude Code and Claude Duet?

Claude Code works inside a folder on your computer, reads every file there, follows written rules and runs saved procedures, so it suits repeatable document work. Claude Duet runs on its own cloud computer, watches your connected apps, messages you first and asks before sending, paying, signing or deleting. It suits ongoing follow-through.

Do I need Claude Code if I have Claude Duet?

It depends on your work. Claude Duet focuses on email, calendar and connected apps and, during the preview, can't see files on your computer. If your business produces documents from many local files, such as tenders, quotes or reports, Claude Code is still the better tool for that part of the job.

Is Claude chat enough for a small business?

For questions, explanations and one-off drafts, yes. Chat starts to struggle when the same job repeats every week, needs many files at once, or depends on rules you'd have to paste in each time. Those jobs are better moved to Claude Code or, for monitoring work, an agent such as Claude Duet.
