When to start a fresh Claude Code conversation.
Long conversations drift. Short conversations forget. Knowing when to reset is the meta-skill.
Overview
Claude Code conversations have practical limits. Too short and Claude lacks context; too long and it drifts or starts contradicting itself. The reset moment is a skill worth cultivating.
Signs you should reset
• Claude is suggesting changes that contradict earlier ones in the same conversation.
• You've been on the same conversation for 4+ hours.
• You're now working on a different feature than where you started.
• Claude is making the same mistake twice after correction.
What to bring to the new conversation
Update CLAUDE.md with anything you learned this session. Start fresh with: "Read CLAUDE.md. We're now working on [next feature]."
Stay in one conversation when
You're iterating tightly on a single component or feature. The context Claude has built up is your friend; don't lose it for no reason.
