Long research with Claude — half-day tasks in 30 minutes.
The five-step pattern that turns multi-hour research into a structured deliverable. Always with citations.
Overview
Multi-hour research jobs become 30-minute jobs once you've learned the pattern. The trick is structuring the request, demanding citations, and saving the output where future you will find it.
Frame the question precisely
Vague questions get vague research. "Tell me about Singapore fintech" is too broad. "What are the top 5 SG SME lending platforms by volume in 2026, with sources" is right-sized.
Ask for the structure first
"Don't research yet — propose the structure of the final document." Approve or tweak. Then research. This saves an hour of wrong-shape output.
Require citations and save the output
"Cite every claim with a real source URL. Save the final document as research-[topic-slug].md in /Claude Research/."
Then ask: "What are the 3 questions I should ask next?" — the natural follow-up that compounds your knowledge over time.
