Claude Cowork is Claude.ai with connectors to your Gmail, Calendar, and Drive — a coworker, not a chatbot. Here's what changes.
Overview
If you've only ever used ChatGPT, Claude Cowork is going to feel like a different category of tool. The chat interface looks familiar, but the connectors change the shape of what you can ask it to do. Suddenly the question isn't 'what can you help me write' — it's 'what should we work on together this morning'.
How Cowork is different from ChatGPT
ChatGPT, in its default form, is a text-in, text-out box. You can't trust it with private data because you don't know what happens to it. It can't see your inbox, your calendar, or anything outside the conversation.
Claude Cowork is Claude.ai (Anthropic's chat product) with the connectors enabled — Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, and a growing list. It reads your real data on demand, drafts in your voice, saves outputs to your Drive. Per Anthropic's Pro plan terms, it doesn't train on your chats.
What it's good at
Cowork shines at ambient work: inbox triage, calendar prep, weekly summaries, long research that used to take half a day, recurring tasks you want to systematise.

• Drafting meeting prep from past Gmail and Drive context.
• Running multi-step research with citations and saving to Drive.
• Building topic knowledge bases that persist across conversations.
What it's not good at
Cowork is a worse tool than Claude Code if your work involves writing or shipping software. Cowork is also a worse tool than a domain specialist if your work requires deep technical expertise it doesn't have (specialised medical research, legal-grade contract review, etc.).
If your output lives entirely in your head with no recurring shape, Cowork's value is limited — connectors don't unlock much when there's nothing to connect to.

Is it safe to connect my work Gmail?
Per Anthropic's Pro plan terms, Claude does not train on chats and reads connected data on demand only. Check your employer's AI policy too — some Workspace admins disable third-party OAuth.
Do I need Pro or Max?
Pro (US$20/mo) is enough for v1. Max (US$100/mo) helps if you hit Pro's daily caps regularly.
