Getting cited by Claude — what we know.
Claude doesn't have a public search index. But it does cite when given web access. Here's what we know.
Overview
Claude.ai's web search and the Claude API's web-fetching capabilities cite sources. The patterns that work mirror what works for Perplexity and ChatGPT search.
Claude's crawler
Allow ClaudeBot, Claude-Web, and anthropic-ai in robots.txt.
Content shape
Claude tends to prefer pages with clear structure, real specifics, and proper schema. Long-form essay-style content (substantively, not by word count) tends to get cited more than thin SEO pages.
The llms.txt bet
Anthropic hasn't endorsed llms.txt officially, but the convention is most likely to be respected by AI-native engines first. Shipping llms.txt is cheap insurance.
