Overview

GitHub Copilot has the distribution advantage — it ships in every JetBrains and VS Code install. Claude Code has the conversational advantage. The pick depends on how you want to write code.

Where Copilot wins

Inline autocomplete. The single-most-used feature of any AI coding tool, and Copilot's is consistently strong. If you write a lot of code by hand and want it faster, Copilot stays out of your way.

Where Claude Code wins

Whole-feature work. Telling Claude Code "add an enquiry form to the contact page that posts to /api/contact and emails me via Resend" produces working code in one shot. Copilot wants you to type the form line by line. Multi-file refactors. Claude Code reads the whole repo, makes coordinated changes across files, and explains what it changed.

Best of both

Many developers use Copilot for inline and Claude Code for the heavier lifts. The tools complement rather than compete.
